Golden Globe nominations: Barbie and Oppenheimer lead the contenders for 2024
Barbie and Oppenheimer led the list of Golden Globe nominations with nine and eight respectively. The 79th ceremony is set to take place in Los Angeles on 7 January next year, with Cillian Murphy, Leonardo DiCaprio, Emma Stone and Da'Vine Joy Randolph nominated for their acting performances.
Succession led the television nominations, with nine in total, including best TV drama series. Only Murders in the Building, The Diplomat, The Morning Show and The Crown all received recognition for their performances. South Korean film Past Lives received the most non-English language film nominations with five nods in total.
Taylor Swift's Eras Tour received a nomination in the newly introduced box office achievement category, along with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3., Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One.
Hosts for the ceremony have not yet been announced, but the Golden Globes are traditionally a more lighthearted event than many of the other awards ceremonies, with celebrity guests usually in a good mood, fresh from their Christmas break. The ceremony is known for its acerbic hosts who make cutting jokes at the expense of the A-list nominees in attendance, much to the delight of audiences at home.
The HFPA, which organizes the ceremony, has attracted controversy in recent years due to allegations of corruption and a lack of diversity within its membership. However, it has put in place changes to address these concerns and increased membership to 300, with a more diverse voting body.
The Golden Globe nominations for best performance in stand-up comedy include Ricky Gervais, Trevor Noah and Amy Schumer. Meryl Streep, who holds the record for the most Golden Globe nominations, received a nod in best supporting role for her work in Only Murders in the Building.
Overall, Netflix led the nominations with 28 in total, 13 for film and 15 for television shows, while HBO Max had the most television nominations with 17 in total.
